The short answer
The five mistakes that cost online sellers the most sales are: choosing products without proper research, publishing weak listings, handling orders slowly, neglecting SEO and website speed, and growing without a clear plan. Each one is fixable with a simple routine: check demand and competition before you buy stock, rewrite titles and images for buyers, set shipping and reply targets, fix your site speed and product content, and set monthly goals per sales channel.
Running an online store is not just about listing products and waiting for orders. Most stores that struggle are not short of effort. They lose sales to a handful of avoidable problems that quietly repeat every day. Below are the five we see most often when sellers come to us, what each one looks like, and how to fix it.
1. Poor product research
Many sellers choose products because they look popular or because a supplier offered a good price. Then they discover there are already fifty sellers with hundreds of reviews, or that fees and shipping eat most of the margin.
Why it costs sales: a product with low demand or heavy competition will struggle no matter how good the listing is. Every later step, from photos to ads, works harder and returns less.
How to fix it:
- Check real demand: search volume on the marketplace, best-seller ranks and how many reviews the top sellers have.
- Work out the full cost per sale: product, shipping, marketplace fees, returns and advertising. Only launch if the margin still works.
- Look for a clear reason a buyer would choose you, such as a better bundle, better quality or a gap in the reviews competitors keep getting.
This is the first step of our Amazon private label service, because a well-researched product makes everything after it easier.
2. Unoptimized listings
A listing has a few seconds to convince a buyer. Weak titles, dark or cluttered images and descriptions that list features but never explain the benefit all make buyers scroll past.
Why it costs sales: the listing affects both whether you are found and whether you are chosen. Marketplace search reads your title and attributes; buyers read your images and bullet points.
How to fix it:
- Put the words buyers actually search for at the start of the title, followed by the key details such as size, material or quantity.
- Use a clean main image that follows the marketplace's rules, plus images showing the product in use, its size and what is in the box.
- Write bullet points that answer buyer questions: what problem it solves, who it is for and why it is better.
- Fill in every attribute field. Missing attributes can hide you from filtered searches.

3. Inefficient order management
Late shipments, wrong tracking numbers, overselling stock you do not have and slow replies to buyer messages all damage the customer experience, and marketplaces measure every one of them.
Why it costs sales: poor performance metrics can reduce your visibility, lose you the buy box or, if they continue, put your seller account at risk. Unhappy buyers also leave the reviews that put off the next buyer.
How to fix it:
- Set a handling time you can always meet, and ship within it every time.
- Keep inventory in sync across every channel so you never sell stock you do not have.
- Reply to buyer messages within 24 hours, and handle returns quickly and politely.
- Check your account health dashboard every week, not only when something goes wrong.
4. Weak SEO and website performance
If you run your own store, a slow site, missing product descriptions or pages that do not work well on phones will lose buyers before they ever see your offer. On marketplaces, the same idea applies to the marketplace's own search.
Why it costs sales: buyers leave slow pages, and search engines rank pages lower when they load slowly or say little. Without search traffic, every visitor has to be paid for with ads.
How to fix it:
- Test your site's speed and fix the biggest problems first, usually large images and too many apps or plugins.
- Write a unique description for every product and category page instead of copying the supplier's text.
- Give every page a clear title and description that match what buyers search for.
- Make sure checkout works smoothly on a phone, where most shopping now happens.
We cover this in our Shopify store setup and ecommerce website development work.
5. No clear growth strategy
Many stores grow by reacting: running a sale when sales are slow, joining a new marketplace because a friend did, or boosting a few posts. Without a plan, it is hard to know what is working.
Why it costs sales: time and money get spread across too many things, and the channels or products that could grow fastest never get enough attention.
How to fix it:
- Set simple monthly goals per channel, such as sales, profit and conversion rate, and review them every month.
- Add new sales channels one at a time, once the current ones run smoothly.
- Keep your branding, product content and pricing consistent across every channel.
- Use social media to build a brand people search for, not only to announce discounts. Our social media management is built around this.
Frequently asked questions
What is the most common ecommerce mistake?
Choosing products without proper research. Many sellers buy stock because a product looks popular, without checking demand, competition, fees and margin. If the numbers do not work before launch, better listings and ads rarely save the product.
How do I know if my product listings are hurting sales?
Look at your conversion rate: the share of visitors who buy. If a listing gets views but few sales, the title, main image, price or reviews are usually the problem. Compare your listing side by side with the top three sellers for the same product and note what they show that you do not.
How fast should online orders be shipped?
As fast as the marketplace expects, and always within the handling time you promise. Walmart, Amazon, eBay and TikTok Shop all track late shipments, and repeated delays can lower your visibility or put your account at risk. Many sellers aim to ship within one to two business days.
Do I need SEO if I sell on marketplaces like Amazon or Walmart?
Yes. Marketplaces have their own search engines, so the words in your titles, bullet points and descriptions decide whether buyers find you. If you also run your own website, Google SEO and fast page loading bring buyers you do not pay for per click.
